Mackay West State School is located in an established residential area of Mackay adjacent to fast-growing suburbs including Ooralea and Cuttersfield which encompasses the expanding Mackay campus of the Central Queensland University.

Mackay West State School currently has an enrolment of approximately 846 students and is staffed by a principal, two deputies, 31 class teachers, specialist teachers and various ancillary staff who provide quality learning for children in Prep to Year 7. Many children live in the local area and utilise the well-established bicycle paths whilst others rely on an efficient, safe bus service.
