Pelaw Main Public School is located south of Kurri Kurri with a school population of 218 students (160 families); approximately 15% of our students are Aboriginal (33 students). School priority areas for the 2012-2014 Strategic Plan are Literacy, Numeracy and Student/Community Engagement. Over the past twelve months the school population has increased its enrolment numbers from 205. This has resulted in the establishment of a ninth class. Pelaw Main Public School caters for children from Kindergarten to Year 6. Boys make up 55% of the student population and the girls 45%. It is anticipated that in 2014, the school enrolment numbers will increase to about 230 with both a high number of anticipated Kindergarten enrolments and Year 3 enrolments from Stanford Merthyr Infants School. The school is a proud member of the Kurri Kurri Learning Community (KKLC). The schools in the KKLC work together to promote a comprehensive education from K-12 in the Kurri Kurri area through a collaboratively developed strategic plan. The KKLC includes Kurri Kurri High School and its partner schools Stanford Merthyr Infants School, Pelaw Main Public School, Weston Public School, Mulbring Public School and Kurri Kurri Public School. This approach to K-12 education has been recognised for its effectiveness in providing consistency and continuity through transition. In 2012 the KKLC continued its implementation of the Kick Starting Careers Program, for which it received a Director General’s Award in 2010. Five of the six schools participate in the National Partnership for Low SES Communities, and part of that funding is pooled for strategies that support educational outcomes and life opportunities for all students in the learning community. The priority areas for this plan are Aboriginal Education, Career Education, Gifted and Talented Education and Student Engagement, Community Engagement, Literacy and Numeracy. The focus of the KKLC strategies for 2012 has been on improvement in literacy and numeracy outcomes, attendance, quality teaching, Aboriginal cultural awareness and student engagement.
